there are 7 different waterfalls in the near vicinity of milho verde. walking, the closest is less than 30 minutes away, the furthest i went to was a few hours walk. they were all fantasticn none too large or difficult to reach and all provide wonderfully cool natural pools for a dip. this is no the best one, but still nice. i havent loaded the really nice ones yet :). the main road of milho verde Posted by Picasa

this scene reminds me of one of my favourite moments of the whole trip. milho verde itself is a tiny village stuck in the mountains with one main dirt road crossing it horizontally and a half dozen others crossing it north-south. theres virtually no traffic, no industry, nothing that makes a lot of noise, just little shops, a few dozen homes, a pharmacy, a couple of churches and two good bars. its literally peace on earth.

this is the window of the room where i lodged, and the bed is located directly under the window. well, one early early morning i woke up to the strangest noise i had ever heard. at first i thought i was dreaming, then i thought maybe there were extraterrestrials outside. had i been in a city maybe i would have been nervous about checking whatever it was out there, but this being the most peaceful place on earth i was quite excited about the possibility of finally meeting aliens and thus followed my curiosity and openned my window. to my absolute amusement i found myself nose to nose with this cow as she took a break from her grazing to greet me hellow :). the noise i had heard but could not categorize was the sound of grass being determinedly ripped from the ground by the nozzle of this lovely cow :)). fantastic! Posted by Picasa

this is a little home on the road between diamantina and milho verde. bavaria is a brand of beer, a good one too. someone lives here, in this simple place, without any luxury, probably no electricity, no hot water, probably an outside toilet down a hole on the ground. it is so different from where i live, but i cannot judge it worse, or better. instead im fascinated by the thought that inside there is laughter, and love, and hardship, and sickness, and dreams, and worries, and good times and hard times. just like in my house.Posted by Picasa

i had heard of milho verde from my sister. she knew a german guy who had moved there after a short stay, and had married a local and there made his new life. i was fascinated by the thought of a german in the middle of nowhere in this vast region. i had also heard of millho verde from friends and magazines which rated it highly for beauty and naturalness. so i took the bus to diamantina and spent a few days there, and then decided one day that i was going to walk the 45 kms or so to milho verde. i figure it would take half a day, but what i didnt count on was the steep terrain which took me up and down intense red earth. i made it to about 10km out of diamantina, where i came across an amazing set of caves. that gave me a good excuse for avoiding the next 30 kms :-). the following day i got on the 6am bus which took me to milho verde and realised how foolish my original ambition of walking was - it was a very hilly and deserted road and would have taken me well over half a day to walk... Posted by Picasa
